From reading the text, I think public relations cannot be defined specifically because one’s role in public relations is dependent of the size and nature of the organization one is working for. However, I would define public relations as a broad management role that maintains ongoing communication between the organization and its targeted public(s), plans and publicizes activities/events, and brands products to build corporate identities.
Overall, I think a career in public relations is a really demanding job in today’s fast-paced world. It must be difficult to multitask with multiple types of media that you need to execute multiple tasks and goals each day. I also think a degree in public relations must offer many opportunities for jobs and a wide range of different businesses and organizations. As a result, I think that broadens the range of work public relations practitioners could potentially face in the workforce.
As a communication studies major at Clemson University, I am looking forward to learning more about public relations this semester. I am not completely set on what I hope to do come graduation (in two years!), and hopefully the classes I am taking this semester will help me narrow my career path.
In general, I consider myself a pretty worldly person who is open to new ideas and experiencing new cultures. I would love to have a job in which I could travel or interact with different countries. Though I have not yet visited that many places, I hope to study abroad next summer. In particular, I would love to visit Egypt and Greece. In addition to an interest in travel, I love being active, shopping, and watching/critiquing movies.
